Fourth Grade Curriculum and Grading
Mathematics
The fourth grade curriculum and instruction is primarily driven by the Common Core State Standards. In math we have found the Engage New York Curriculum to be rigorous and relevant in preparing our students for the Smarter Balanced Assessment given by the state. We will also be using TenMarks and SumDog within our math curriculum. Getting the apps to TenMarks and SumDog would be very helpful!
Language Arts
The Reading Wonders program offers students opportunities to continuously improve on reading comprehension and fluency. In conjunction with the Reading Wonders program we will also be using KidBiz, an online program which provides the only patented, cloud-based solutions that deliver daily differentiated instruction for nonfiction reading and writing that’s precisely tailored to each student’s Lexile® reading level. In writing, we will be using the "Being a Writer" curriculum, a collaborative and well-rounded writing program that will help us prepare our students for enjoying writing as well as doing well on the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA). Fourth grade will also be using Spellingcity.com (there's an app for it!) to help sharpen phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and grammar skills.
Science and Social Studies
In science and social studies, we use a variety of resources depending on what is currently happening in our islands current events. The curriculum continues to be strongly driven and aligned with the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards III. As we move closer to implementing the Next Generation Science Standards, lessons from the Engineering is Elementary Curriculum as well as Project Lead the Way will be implemented this year. Since fourth grade focuses heavily on Hawaiʻi's history previous to western contact, much of the entire curriculum is embedded with lessons and values of our past. We learn about who we are as a people, how we got here, who we come from, ways of life, sustainable choices, preservation of land and culture, and ultimately learn about making choices today that will positively impact the future of Maui and the rest of Hawaiʻi, and ultimately our honua. It is with great pleasure and kuleana that the fourth grade team takes this seriously and does our best to educate and inspire our students to learn, teach, share, and tell the world what a precious and fragile place we live in.
Physical Education
We will be using some lessons from the SPARKS curriculum that will implement collaboration, team building, physical awareness and goal-setting.
